About Greencone
"Greencone" is a Lignin producer since 2004, and at the forefront to support a circular industry, leading towards a sustainable economy and green future.
CO2 emissions concern and limited fossil-based sources are main driving force to move towards bio-based materials. Our speciality product, lignin, is a 3D biopolymer with specific features to utilise in plenty of applications, where the phenolic monomers afford high mechanical modulus, cross-linking characteristics, antioxidant properties, etc. Not only from an economic standpoint, but also from environmentally friendly aspect, lignin is an attractive renewable source for many industries. Our mission is to prepare for the fossil crisis as well as global-warming phenomenon.
Having pioneered the extraction of different types of lignins, Greencone has more than 15 years of experience in turning biomass into valuable products. We supply local markets with innovative products based on annual plants and other lignocellulosic biomass. Greencone is dedicated to providing its customers with novel products and technical support enhancing their quality and environmental requirements.
Learn MoreWhat is Lignin
Lignin is an organic substance belonging to a group of aromatic alcohols. It is naturally produced by certain plants (especially woody plants and certain algal species). It is found in the secondary cell walls of plants where it serves as a binder for cellulose fibers and provides stiffness to the cell walls. it is present in wood primarily to provide structural support and protection against degradation by microorganisms. It fills the spaces in the cell wall particularly in xylem tracheids, vessel elements and sclereid cells. Since lignin is hydrophobic it assists in the efficient water transport across the vascular tissue. Ecologically, the importance of lignin is associated with the carbon cycle. It takes carbon from the atmosphere into the woody plant tissues and therefore acts as an important reserve of carbon in the form of humus as the plant tissue slowly decomposes.

Besides Lignin, the other components are cellulose, hemicellulose, protein, fat, ash, and water. Lignin, a complex molecule built up from phenolic alcohols, is a 3D polymer known as nature’s glue. Over the past decades it has been a flourishing time for lignin to integrate into multiple industries. Replacement of fossil-based phenol with bio-based lignin is one of the hot topics in phenol-formaldehyde resin applied to engineered wood products. Plywood production using lignin-based phenolic resin is one of that highly focused research. Other examples are laminated veneer lumber, glue laminated timber, paper-based laminates, and mineral-based insulation boards. Kraft lignin has been known to feature the highest reactivity and have the best adhesive properties among other types.

Protobind® KW
Protobind KW is our speciality product with proven capability to be used in PF resin manufacturing process. This product, as a natural polyphenolic material obtained from woody plants, offers a bio-based alternative to fossil-based materials such as phenol. Our product can be used as a partial substitute for phenol used in PF resin production. The replacement degree can be flexible, depending on the layout and design of the available production process to produce lignin-based PF resin. However, thanks to intensive research work, plenty of modification methods are available to apply to ease and optimise the processes.
